NovoNordisk has launched a strategic three-year partnership with the American Society of Hematology (@ASHSociety) to enhance sickle cell disease (SCD) care in sub-Saharan Africa. The collaboration will strengthen the Consortium on Newborn Screening in Africa (CONSA) Community Health Worker Initiative across seven countries: Ghana, Kenya, Liberia, Nigeria, Tanzania, Uganda, and Zambia.

The initiative focuses on training community health workers to deliver critical SCD services, including diagnosis, education, care coordination, and follow-up support. With over 75% of global SCD births occurring in sub-Saharan Africa and CONSA having screened 140,000+ newborns since 2018, this partnership addresses the crucial gap in post-diagnosis care continuity.

At OxyDial, we see this community-based approach as essential for addressing SCD’s complex care challenges in underserved regions. By empowering local healthcare workers and reducing barriers like stigma and distance to care, this initiative could significantly improve patient outcomes where they’re needed most.
