GE HealthCare, after acquiring Caption Health, a maker of AI-powered ultrasound technology, has secured a $44 million grant from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. This funding will support the development of Caption’s AI algorithms, which assist clinicians in conducting accurate ultrasound scans even without formal training. The focus of the grant is to bring this technology to low- and middle-income countries, particularly in improving maternal health and lung screening.

Ultrasound scans play a crucial role in reducing maternal and child mortality rates by detecting fetal health markers, umbilical blood flow, and other conditions related to pregnancy complications. Additionally, ultrasound scans of the lungs can identify pneumonia at an early stage, improving treatment outcomes for children under 5. This grant will enable wider access to affordable and high-quality medical care through AI-guided ultrasound technology, benefiting under-resourced communities.
